Circa 1998
Circa 1998 is a series of film photographs and pixelated paintings that explores the relationship between art, nostalgia and delayed gratification. The process of creating Circa 1998 involved capturing experiences on film, using paint and design to reveal the complexity and simplicity of these moments. These works encouraged me to slow down and embrace the process of delayed gratification, while also paying homage to nostalgia.
Inspired by the concept and feeling of nostalgia, I documented experiences that brought me joy as a child—from vintage cars, to riding bikes in the street with friends, and being eager to buy my favorite treat from the neighborhood ice cream truck. These precious moments reminded me how refreshing it is to see glimpses of the past still being in the present.
Circa 1998 invites viewers to reflect on the joys of their own nostalgic moments, to consider nostalgia as a source of comfort, healing, and a bridge between the past and present. The series captures the essence of simpler times, serving as a reminder of the importance of preserving these memories in our fast-paced world. It offers a collective pause, celebrating the beauty of remembering and the power of art to evoke and immortalize the fleeting moments that shape our human experience.
